Business guidance, support & development
I help people build, develop and grow their business while also supporting the life, growth and wellbeing of entrepreneurs too.
There's a lot more to running a business than understanding business itself. Business ownership involves continious thinking, feeling, decision-making, troubleshooting, problem-solving and adaptation, and often whilst trying to balance work with home life, relationships, health, wellbeing and everything else that's going on and happening beyond the business.
A business owner may need to think about money and numbers, customers, leads and retention, ideas, uncertainty, creativity, responsibility, communication, leadership, networks and relationships, systems, attention, focus, time and energy, and oftentimes all within the same day, and repeatedly across the weeks, months and years of running a business.
There are a lot of hats to wear! And part of becoming more capable in business is learning how to move between the hats: taking moments to pause and step back, seeing situations from different perspectives, recognising what's needing focus and attention, making considered decisions, developing the skills that are required, and managing your own balance and capacity along the way.
My approach brings together coaching, mentoring, practical business development and reflective thinking space to help you understand what is happening across both life and business, strengthen the areas that need attention, develop the skills and capabilities required to run a successful business, and to make thoughtful, sustainable progress in your life.
I help you become increasingly clear, capable and resourceful in building and running a business that works commercially, serves people well - from customers to staff - and supports the kind of life, success and fulfilment you want to live and experience.
How I work
I'm interested in working with entrepreneurs and businesses that are commercially workable, and are also sustainable. Below is a flavour of entrepreneurs I work with.
Exploring an idea
You may not even know yet whether you want a business. We can explore the idea, what it would involve, what you need from it, the risks and realities, and whether it deserves testing.
Start-ups & early-stage businesses
Together we'll build strong foundations around your:
offer · customers · pricing · cashflow · visibility · sales · operations · confidence · priorities
And I'll journey with you as you grow
Established business owners
I help you to begin stepping back from your day-to-day, and to look more closely at your: direction · profitability · systems · customers · workload · people · leadership · bottlenecks · change · growth
It might be that there's something to improve, or simplify, or re-design or rebuild.
Entrepreneurs & sole traders
I work with people whose business is closely tied to their own energy, time, creativity, expertise or identity.
Leaders & teams
I provide support and guidance around: communication · leadership · culture · collaboration · boundaries · customer journey and experience · facing difficult conversations · change
Owner/operator-led, franchise, partnerships & family businesses
I work with business owners where their business decisions, personal life and relationships, roles and responsibilities can become tightly intertwined.
We'll pay attention to both the business, resolving any issues and problems, and the relational dynamics and systems as well as you and your life.
Depending on your current business model, stage of business, what's going on and what's mattering to you, our time together might include:
Direction & strategy
Purpose, priorities, goals, planning and next steps.
Money & numbers
Cashflow, costs, pricing, capacity and income requirements.
Customers & value
Understanding who you serve, what they need and why they choose you.
Offers & services
Scope, proposition, delivery and business model.
Marketing & visibility
Communication, messaging, networking and finding appropriate ways to be seen.
Sales & conversations
Enquiries, customer conversations, follow-up, conversion and service.
Customer care & experience
What happens before, during and after somebody is buying from you.
Operations & systems
Organisation, processes, tools, administration and repeatability.
Leadership & people
Teams, delegation, culture, communication, responsibility and development.
Thinking & decision-making
Critical thinking, assumptions, evidence, trade-offs and judgement.
Personal capability
Confidence, self-awareness, resilience, creativity, boundaries and resourcefulness.
Change & growth
Testing, learning, adapting, consolidating, redesigning and choosing what comes next.
What we might work on
Because running, managing and sustaining a business requires much more than technical knowledge, I help the entrepreneur to develop themselves and their capabilities that go into the technical knowledge.
We also need the capacity to notice, think, relate, collaborate and act.
My work is strongly aligned with the Inner Development Goals, particularly their five areas of human development:
Being
Self-awareness · Presence · Integrity · Inner compass · Openness
Thinking
Critical thinking · Perspective · Systems thinking · Creativity · Long-term orientation
Relating
Empathy · Compassion · Appreciation · Connectedness · Humility
Collaborating
Communication · Relationship-building · Co-creation · Inclusion · Mobilising others
Acting
Courage · Proactivity · Resilience · Hope · Conscious use of resources
I don't use these as another checklist that somebody must complete.
They provide a useful developmental lens for asking:
What capabilities will help you meet the business you are trying to build?
Because ultimately the goal isn't only to know more about business.
It is to become increasingly able to run one well.

Not sure what you need?
That's okay, because the above are guidelines only. As an entrepreneur, your life and business are highly unique and specific to you. Whilst I offer many services, I simply begin with you and where you are. As we begin to explore, inquire and if and where necessary - resolve the most current pressing issues that you're facing we can begin seeing the wood from the trees. Once we've 'cleared the decks' a little more, and you have yourself on your feet or facing in the right direction, you'll begin to see the areas of business and skills it is that you'll be wanting to develop.
BOOK A BUSINESS CONVERSATION
From me
Presence · Curiosity · Honesty · Practical thinking · Relevant experience · Compassionate challenge · Clear boundaries · Accountability without judgement
I won’t pretend to know everything about your industry.
And I won’t pretend there is one correct way to build a business.
I will bring attention, questions, experience, structure and practical thinking to the business you are trying to create.
From you
Bring what’s actually happening to the table.
This would include the bits that are working, the bits that aren’t, the things you’ve avoided and the numbers you’d rather not look at.
You remain responsible for your decisions and actions. But I can help you think, challenge, plan, learn, grow, problem solve and troubleshoot.
Ways we can work together
Depending on the way we agree to work, there may be reasonable contact between sessions for brief reflections, questions, check-ins and accountability.
If something needs more substantial coaching or exploration, we’ll normally bring it into a session or agree on some additional time.
Between sessions
Dan's background
I grew up in a family run business, and started in business very young (teens) and have spent much of my working life around entrepreneurship, customers, teams and small businesses.
I’ve owned and operated businesses across hospitality, retail and barbering, managed teams of 20+, worked across recruitment, training, marketing, finance, operations and customer experience, and helped establish an in-store barbershop partnership within John Lewis & Partners’ Southampton flagship.
I later retrained professionally in coaching, facilitation and people development.

Farside's practical guide for building a sustainable business that operates in real life.
Running a business involves much more than simply having a good idea, or wanting freedom and to be in more control of your future.
Getting an entrepreneur's hat on and managing your business can ask a lot from you. Business will ask for you to make very wise, strategic and well thought through decisions, understand money, serving customers, solving issues, challenges and problems, communicating effectively and with professional and emotional competence, adapting and making many adjustments time and time again, being organised, to lead and take responsibility and ownership, and to keep of developing skills and learning - while also managing your own time, energy, relationships, health and life beyond the business.
The Living Business Guide is a practical framework for helping you step back, understand where you are, recognise what needs your focus and attention, and to make more considered decisions about where you're going and what you're doing next.
The Living Business Guide is built around three live stages:
STAGE ONE: Direction & Foundations
Get clear on what you’re building and cultivating, and whether it can work.
Direction
Know what you are building, why it matters, and what success and fulfilment need to look like.Numbers
Understand what the business needs financially to become workable and sustainable.Offer
Shape something useful, valuable and worth choosing.
Business development for the head and the heart
Being your own boss can be rewarding, creative and meaningful. It can also be uncertain, demanding and lonely.
